New Program - Baby Bubbles!

A parent/child class for those too little to take a swim class on their own.  Babies and toddlers learn to enjoy the water and feel comfortable blowing bubbles and splashing about in the therapeutic heated Estabrook pool. 6 weeks  Special Introductory Price: $35

Beginners Start Here: Pups

Our Pups Program starts right at the very beginning with water confidence skills in the warm, shallow pool at Estabrook School.  Children are taught to put their faces in the water, and use their arms and legs effectively to produce swim strokes.  Three 45 minute classes are available per week, attend as many or as few as you like. 6 weeks. $60.

Keep Swimming: Junior Otters

Swimming in the shallow end of the Ypsilanti High School Pool, Junior Otters learn different strokes and dives, and continue to work on breathing and crawl, aiming to swim one length with a consistent stroke and sustainable breathing pattern. Three 60 minute classes are available per week, attend as many or as few as you like. 13 weeks. $140

Ready to get serious?

Then it’s time to join our Development Program at the Ypsilanti High School pool.  At practice, swimmers work on all four main strokes, as well as starts and turns.  Interval-based aerobic training is also introduced. Most swimmers in this program compete in our tri-county SMSL (Southern Michigan Swim League) meets, although this is not mandatory.  There are SMSL dual meets approximately once every two weeks, and at the end of the season we compete in all-team championships.  Each dual meet has a featured stroke or event, so swimmers gain experience in all four main strokes throughout the season.

Four 60 minute practices are available per week.  13 weeks. $180.

Want to Swim at the Olympics?  Or for your school? Or just as fast as you can?

Then you need our Competitive Program.  Serious training for serious swimmers.  As well as the local tri-county dual meets, many of our competitive swimmers swim at USA meets –the foremost national association of amateur swimming.

In addition to advanced drills for the four main strokes, starts and turns, you’ll receive training in race strategy, interval-based aerobic training and anaerobic training.

Competitive Swimmers train at the Ypsilanti High School pool for 2.5 hours (including dry-land training), five times per week.  13 weeks $240.  An additional practice session is available on Saturdays for a fee of $60.

Parents Too: Supporting Members

Subject to pool space, supporting members are able to use the pool for exercise while their children practice. $25 tax-deductible donation, larger donations appreciated.

Summer Swimming

  • Rutherford Pool in Ypsilanti - Coach Bonnie and Boardmember Cathy Thorburn run this program
  • Forestbrooke Pool - Boardmembers Mary Gillis and Vanessa Clarke help run this program

Registration after the Season has started

Registration continues until programs are full.  Come to Ypsilanti High School with a completed registration form at 5:30 -  bring your child(ren) with suits if they are new to Otters so the coaches can determine the best group for them.

Try the Otters!

The Ypsilanti Otters welcomes families to visit our swim program at Ypsilanti High School.

  1. Please check our calendar (see Calendar link above) to make sure we are practicing the day you would like to visit.  Our Junior Otter and Development swimmers do not practice on Tuesdays at Ypsilanti High this term.
  2. Send us an email (webmaster@ypsi-otters.org) to let us know how many children, their ages, and their current swimming ability.

This is an opportunity for you to meet with our coaches and some of our families as you consider whether to join.
